Guys, a friend of mine wants to buy an ‘08 7 Series.

Its an amazing car, but expensive to fix. I’d personally stick to getting this as a CPO or from CarMax with a warranty.

But for $18k (+$1500 for a 3 yr dealership warranty) and clean Car Fax, its a good deal.

The dealership will let him bring a mechanic. But they don’t want him to take the car outside the dealership for inspection, because they under-staffed. For me, this is not a good sign.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the 7 Series. Can you guys weigh in and help me articulate the potential issues with this car?

There’re plenty of warning signs here, but if your buddy has, say, $25 grand in cash to spend on a car, it’s not the worst deal. The price is pretty nice, and he can put the rest away for the inevitable breakdowns.

If the dealership won’t allow the car to be taken off premise to be inspected by a third party mechanic, the deal is a no go.

Walk away. There is a reason they won’t let it off their lot.

It is a good deal. And chances are, he will go for it.

And that why I wanted to look into common issues and what it would cost to fix them. At least then he can be prepared.

Lolol I have learned to become tolerant.

Most car dealers Ive dealt with refuse to understand the cars they sell. A common strategy is they’ll just tell you every awesome thing they’ve seen in a car ever, whether or not that applies to the car they’re selling :D

Its almost like they’re a different breed...

I could write a page on why you should advise your buddy to run away, but I’ll keep it simple and just say that I work on them, and they’re terrible. Nobody I know in the industry thinks the E65 is a good car. Your buddy should just buy the best E38 he can find and care for it properly. It’s a vastly better car and will give years of service, whereas these vampires will be rotting in salvage yards within the decade.

Can you tell me what forum discusses issues with these cars, so I can alert him on the most common issues?

Cos from the looks of it, this guy really really wants to get it...

Cliff notes:

Engine (valve guides (although rarer on the 4.8s), extensive oil leaks, intake manifolds, Valvetronic failures, PCV problems, cooling system failure)
Transmission (leaks, various driveability issues, premature failure)
Interior (seat occupancy mats & adjustment drives, SRS code issues, touch surface peeling, seat seams, weak leather)
Electronics (battery cables, fuse panels, distribution panels, i-Drive units, radio heads, nav units, amplifiers, etc)
Body & Trim (water leaks, cheap plastic trim failure, poor paint quality, fading)

Bimmerforums and Bimmerfest are probably the bigger forums, but they’re both rife with typical forum fanboy BS, so read carefully.
